Cefn Mawr hits LTI landmark
Workers at Hanson Cement limestone quarry achieve 5,000 days without a lost-time incident
WORKERS at Hanson Cement’s Cefn Mawr Quarry have achieved another health and safety landmark by completing 5,000 days without a lost-time incident (LTI).
The last time an employee suffered an accident, which meant taking time off work, was on 11 March 1999. The quarry has already received Hanson’s Platinum Award for workplace safety, the highest health and safety award for 10 years without an LTI, which equates to 3,650 accident-free days.
This latest achievement is even more significant given Cefn Mawr operates on a 24h basis transporting limestone to the nearby Padeswood cement plant. On site there are eight full-time employees, one contract haulier (Allan Morris Transport) who employs 12 drivers, and a contract mobile plant operator.
Since 2002, more than 6 million tonnes of limestone have been delivered from the quarry to Padeswood, which equates to more than 215,000 journeys covering a total distance in excess of 3.3 million miles – equivalent to 125 times around the world or seven times to the moon and back.
Quarry supervisor Jason Parry said: ‘We need to celebrate the efforts site staff and the contractors have shown. This is a fantastic success story that shows that everyone on site is committed to the strong health and safety values the company practises.’
Site staff meet every morning to discuss the day’s work programme and health and safety is an important aspect of the discussions. There is a strong safety culture at the site, built on good housekeeping, near-miss reporting and looking out for each other.’
Mr Parry added: ‘Our industry is making great strides in looking after its employees. We all want to work in a safe environment, so if a member of staff comes up with a good safety idea we act upon it, which encourages them to come up with more ideas.’
Commenting on the achievement, Patrick O’Shea, chief executive officer of Hanson UK, said: I congratulate and thank the employees at Cefn Mawr. They are setting an excellent standard which I want to see emulated throughout the business.’
