Caterpillar to open new production facility in Far East
RESPONDING to the increased demand for construction machinery in the Asia market, Caterpillar are to open a brand new manufacturing plant in Wujiang, China. According to Mary Bell, vice president of Caterpillar’s Building Construction Products (BCP) Division, four mini excavator models (in the under 8-tonne range) will be produced at the Wujiang site.
‘China is the world’s largest market for excavators in the below 8-tonne class and this new manufacturing facility will put us in a better position to provide our Chinese customers with the right products that will help them succeed,’ said Mary Bell.
Caterpillar expect the production of minis in Wujiang to start in 2012. At present, the company’s mini excavators supplied to the Chinese market are manufactured in Xuzhou, China, and in Sagami, Japan.
The manufacturing plant in Wujiang will play a key role in expanding Caterpillar’s production of construction equipment. Once the new build plant is opened, this will allow operations in Xuzhou and Sagami to focus on other Cat products for the Asia market.
‘During the past three decades Caterpillar have grown from a single sales office in Beijing to 11 manufacturing facilities, three R&D centres, nine offices and two logistics and parts centres,’ explained Jiming Zhu, vice president for China. ‘We want our customers to be more successful working with us and the new operation in Wujiang is the latest step in our long-term strategy for achieving this.’
