Blythewood take on new Volvo roller
With their existing fleet of double-drum rollers all out on hire and another pressing requirement from one of their important clients, Blythewood Plant Hire decided to break with tradition and ordered a brand new DD24 roller from Volvo Construction Equipment.
‘We had just taken the DD24 on evaluation trials to see how it stacked up against our existing brand choice when this particular hire came up from our Peterborough depot, so with this, coupled to our long-standing experience operating Volvo mini-excavators, we decided to take their DD24 double-drum roller on spec,’ said Dave Hazell, operations director at Blythewood Plant Hire.
‘Certainly, the attention to detail in the design and the overall build quality of the DD24 look impressive, and providing it proves itself over the coming months it will certainly be a model we will be adding more of to our fleet moving forward.’
The Volvo DD24 double-drum compactor weighs 2.6 tonnes and has a drum width of 1.2m. The drums feature dual frequencies operating at either 55Hz or 67Hz for optimal impact and delivering nominal amplitude of 0.53cm.
A 260-litre pressurized water feed system directed via four nozzles per drum works in conjunction with spring-loaded, self-adjusting urethane wipers. The DD24 affords the operator a high level of visibility to the drum edges both front and back.
The machined drum surface, with radiused and chamfered edges, produces a quality finish on each job, while a closed-loop hydrostatic drive system provides seamless direction changes and a maximum speed of up to 10km/h.
