Raising standards through continued learning
One of the most valuable aspects of being part of the Institute of Quarrying is our collective commitment to continuing professional development (CPD). As many of you know, I have a particular passion for raising standards in explosives and blasting, but this can only be effective when set within the wider framework of knowledge and skills that underpin every stage of our industry’s operations.
From its early days as an organization for quarry managers, the Institute has steadily evolved. Our membership today represents a much broader section of the extractives industry, while still maintaining strong support for our core management community. This is reflected in the scope of our CPD, which now gives the learner access to topics spanning the full lifecycle of a site, from planning and operations through to final restoration. A real strength of our approach is that the training is designed and delivered by members who bring genuine operational knowledge and practical experience.
As the year progresses, our branches continue to play a central role by delivering a varied programme of technical evenings and CPD days. These sessions are not only valuable for professional learning, but also provide excellent opportunities to share ideas, discuss challenges, and build connections. I would encourage all members to take full advantage of these events.
We also continue to expand online access to CPD, giving members the flexibility to manage their learning in ways that fit around the realities of modern working life. This balance between in-person and digital opportunities ensures that development remains both accessible and relevant.
Supporting professional growth has always been at the heart of our charitable purpose, both here in the UK and internationally. Through the global IQ network, we are able to collaborate across borders and provide CPD to members in many different regions.
Most recently, we welcomed colleagues from the UAE’s National Security Institute (NSI) to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to establish an IQ branch in the UAE. This initiative will help enhance professional development and safety standards across the region, marking an important milestone in the Institute’s international journey.
As President, I am proud to see the Institute broadening its reach while staying true to its founding principles. Working alongside partners in the UAE and beyond, I look forward to building strong foundations that will support both today’s professionals and the next generation of talent in our industry.
