Celebrating the strength of relationships

As 2024 draws to a close, I begin my December column by praising the strength of relationships we have developed within our Institute and industry, this year and historically. In a season where we value our social time with friends, family, and acquaintances, I extend my appreciation to the friendships and networks we create professionally. Many of these relationships have stood the test of time and are the backbone of our sector’s success, supporting our members’ achievements and career progression.

Last month’s IQ Fellows’ Lunch and Student Awards reflected the positive force of our industry relationships exactly, demonstrating that by working together with respect, passion, and integrity, we can collaboratively shape our sector for the future to make it increasingly safer and more sustainable.

By working together our sector achieves more, and our industry’s collective accomplishments of 2024 have been outstanding. Of particular note have been the successful launch of the accredited University Diploma in Surface Mining Explosives Engineering, created in partnership between the Institute of Quarrying (IQ), the University of Derby, and EPC-UK. Further collaborative success has come as a result of the Heavy Clay Technology Association (HCTa) partnership with IQ and the Mineral Products Qualifications Council (MPQC) to provide continuing professional development (CPD) and deliver a new programme of Heavy Clay Technology Level 2 and Level 3 courses.

Marked progress has also been achieved at the National Stone Centre as the detailed design phase for the IQ’s new home continues to take shape. I look forward to seeing the project further evolve next year. Success regarding our members’ CPD has also been a highlight of 2024, with impressive attendance figures achieved for our vibrant programme of CPD events. Furthermore, the commitment and participation demonstrated by five of our sector organizations – BAA, IQ, MPA, MPQC, and QNJAC – in creating our industry’s Strategic Safety Forum, launched at this year’s Hillhead exhibition, offers tremendous scope to attain the highest-possible standards of performance regarding health and safety into 2025 and beyond.

There is much to look forward to in the new year, and great potential for more positive change to be realized by working collaboratively. Now, though, it is time to celebrate those closer to home, prioritizing personal relationships and work-life balance, and I wish you and your family a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.
