Building a stronger future for our industry

As a passionate advocate for our industry and the essential minerals we supply across the UK, I, like many, have often shared a sense of frustration that our sector has not always received the recognition it truly deserves. Despite being a fundamental part of the national supply chain, and offering fulfilling, long-term careers, the quarrying industry is still too often overlooked, both by policymakers and prospective talent.

That is why, as President of the IQ, I am particularly proud of the work we have done to reshape perceptions. The Institute has taken a leading role in promoting a more proactive, positive image of the industry. We have not only highlighted the vital role we play in society, but also our collective commitment to operating in a sustainable, responsible manner.

What has been especially rewarding is seeing the growing spirit of collaboration across the organizations that represent and support our industry. From attracting future talent to supporting early-career development, there is now a strong, shared effort in ensuring the longevity and resilience of our workforce.

A standout example is this month’s QM article: a report on the Minerals Matter presence at the Big Bang Fair. This initiative is a prime example of collaboration in action. Led by the Mineral Products Qualification Council (MPQC) and supported by IQ and key industry employers – Heidelberg Materials, Tarmac, and Cemex, the event reached more than 20,000 school children. The Minerals Matter stand became a vibrant hub of activity, thanks to the passion and energy of volunteers from those companies who inspired the next generation to consider a future in our sector.

The success of the Big Bang Fair has sparked momentum and planning for an even larger presence next year. It is an exciting blueprint for how we can continue to raise awareness and promote our industry to young people across the UK.

Last month, I also had the privilege of attending the Centre for Mineral Products graduation ceremony at the University of Derby. These occasions are a powerful reminder of the dedication and perseverance shown by students balancing work, study, and personal commitments. My admiration for them and their achievements is immense.

The Centre for Mineral Products is yet another excellent example of what can be achieved through partnership. Together, we are strengthening the skills and knowledge within our industry, helping to build a more capable and resilient workforce for the future. I must also take this opportunity to recognize and thank the Centre’s dedicated tutors. Their passion for both the industry and their students is unmatched, and they are at the heart of the Centre’s continued success.

On the topic of partnerships, in July, the Institute of Asphalt Technology (IAT) Council met at the National Stone Centre (NSC) to tour the site and receive an update on the development project. This marked a major milestone, with IAT formally establishing the NSC as its head office and collaborating with IQ to further the site’s development for the benefit of the entire sector. Once again, this is a clear example of the power of collaboration, and we remain committed to working closely with our partners to deliver long-term value for our members and the wider industry.

Together, through shared goals and combined efforts, we are making real progress. I look forward to what we can continue to achieve in the months ahead.
