Wraps come off JCB Vibromax range

In July 2005 JCB broke with their long-held tradition of organic growth by announcing plans to acquire privately owned Vibromax Compaction Equipment GmbH for an undisclosed sum, a move that marked the Rocester-based company’s first major acquisition since 1967. German firm Vibromax have been major players in the design, manufacture and worldwide distribution of compaction equipment for over 65 years, with headquarters in Düsseldorf and production facilities in Gatersleben, near Leipzig.

Having received final legal approval for the acquisition in September, JCB’s dealer network in the UK and Ireland is now selling the new JCB Vibromax range, in addition to a number of JCB dealers in major European markets who are already long-established Vibromax representatives. The worldwide launch of the JCB Vibromax product line-up will take place in April 2006 at the Intermat exhibition in Paris.

Stephen Gardener, managing director of JCB Vibromax, said the acquisition had allowed JCB to ‘hit the ground running’, providing immediate entry into the compaction equipment market with a range of products that complements JCB’s existing construction equipment line-up.

The JCB Vibromax range comprises over 60 high-performance soil and asphalt compactors, including a full line of self-propelled, single-drum soil compactors and vibratory tandem rollers, as well as lighter equipment such as tampers and plate compactors. Historically, the Gatersleben plant has produced around 2,500 machines a year, but a significant increase in production has already been achieved and further improvements in efficiency will see output continue to rise during 2006.

‘We have a comprehensive line-up to suit the needs of a wide range of customers in the compaction industry,’ said Mr Gardener. ‘JCB Vibromax machines have a rich heritage built on quality engineering and they offer optimum performance through innovative compaction technology. These first months have confirmed the huge potential for JCB Vibromax selling through JCB’s global dealer network.’

At the top end of the JCB Vibromax range is the VM-series of self-propelled single-drum soil compactors, which comprises 14 models with operating weights from 4.6 tonnes to 19.8 tonnes and operating widths from 1.4m to 2.1m. Powered by Cummins engines, all 14 models feature high-torque propulsion components, anti-slip control, a centralized service point, maintenance-free articulation and a spacious, noise-reduced cab with good all-round visibility. In addition, smooth drums or padfoot shells are available on all models.

With their combination of two frequencies and two different amplitudes, designed to meet natural soil frequencies, the VM-series compactors are designed for a wide range of cohesive soil tasks as well as compaction jobs on streets, roads, parking areas and airport projects.

JCB Vibromax’s eight-model range of VMT double-drum vibratory tandem compactors is designed for both asphalt and soil compaction applications. Offering a combination of static weight, centrifugal force, amplitude, fast rolling speed and manoeuvrability, the VMT models are particularly suited to the compaction of sub-bases and the final rolling of asphalt materials. Operating weights range from 1.2 tonnes to 10.5 tonnes with operating widths from 800mm to 1,675mm. The machines are also offered with split drums or drum offset, as well as in combination versions with rubber tyres at the front or rear.

Standard features of the VMT-series machines include: automatic vibration control with manual override, high vibration frequency for fast rolling speed, hydrostatic propulsion of front and rear drums, a lightweight engine cover for easy maintenance access, front-to-rear frame oscillation for stability, a pressurized filtered water-spray system, a ROPS system, an adjustable seat with safety belt, and a reversing alarm.

Other machines in the JCB Vibromax range include VMR-series tampers, VMF-series vibratory plate compactors, VMP-series reversible plate compactors, VMD-series double-drum vibratory walk-behind compactors, VM-series multi-purpose trench compactors, and VM-series towed vibratory compactors.
