WR Chapman & Son take on more Volvo machines

Volvo EC220D crawler excavator

Plant hire firm stays loyal to Volvo CE with the addition of two new D-series crawler excavators

WR Chapman & Son have added two Volvo D-series crawler excavators to their general contracting and plant-hire business, further continuing a long association with Volvo Construction Equipment products.

‘We’ve had a long association with Volvo and know their products, especially with their loading shovels in the past and articulated haulers of which we currently run seven, but more importantly it’s how they have looked after us as a valued customer,’ commented owner Bernie Chapman.

‘We have run and continue to run another make of excavator, but what tempted us towards the Volvo offering was the fact their mid-range machines are powered by six-cylinder engines. This is why we’ve just purchased an EC220D and EC250D to replace a 21-tonne machine and a larger 35-tonne excavator respectively.

‘It’s also an economy of scale because we see the 25-tonner as a far more versatile size for most of the jobs we’re currently undertaking.’

Both machines are covered by Volvo’s Blue service agreements. Equipped with a Stage IIIB D6 engine, the EC220D (pictured) produces 175hp (129kW) and 849Nm of torque. The larger EC250D model offers an output of 202hp (151kW) and a torque of 1,012Nm.

The crawler excavators benefit from an improved hydraulic system with larger pumps that significantly reduce hourly fuel consumption with shorter cycle times. Operators have the option to select the best work mode for the task at hand, ensuring optimum performance and fuel efficiency. Modes include: I-idle; F-fine; G-general; H-heavy; and P-power.

Both machines are also equipped with a new ‘smart’ hydraulics system designed for high productivity, greater digging capacity, easy manoeuvrability and good fuel economy.

The new EC220D and EC250D excavators join WR Chapman’s mobile fleet of 35 machines, including Volvo articulated haulers, along with a fleet of tippers and other associated equipment.
