Wheel-wash system for Merseyside

MWH Associates Ltd, part of the Merseyside-based waste-management specialists MWH Group, approached Hippowash to provide a wheel-wash system for their newly developed site near Wrexham.

Hafod Quarry, purchased from SITA UK in February 2005, has been extracting clay for over 100 years and was granted planning permission for landfill development in the mid-1990s. Designing, planning and building the landfill operation has taken five years to complete. The final part involved putting in the appropriate infrastructure to deal with up to 80 vehicle movements a day.

Mark Griffiths, operations director of MWHA, commented: ‘It was obvious to us that we would need a wheel-wash system on the site. We looked at systems from two manufacturers and we chose Hippowash because we were impressed by its robustness. We’d seen it in operation in similar environments to ours, so we could see for ourselves that it does the job.’

A Hippowash Classic system was installed. At over 6m long, 110 nozzles deliver 1,600 litres of high-pressure water per minute to a vehicle’s chassis, sides, underbody, wheel arches and tyre treads. It is supplied with galvanized access ramps to help shake off compacted debris and galvanized side screens to assist with water reclamation. The system also incorporates a Siltbuster HB50 ST lamella clarifying unit that, in a 5m2 space, is as effective as a 100,000-litre lagoon.
