Volvo EC118C compact excavator for S&H Plant Hire
TWO of the first Volvo EC18C compact excavators to be sold in Britain have been delivered to S&H Plant Hire. The brand new compact excavators are the first Volvo branded machines to be acquired by the customer in its 42 years of operating in the industry.
‘We are always looking for products that raise the standard of what is currently available on the market, both in terms of equipment performance at end-user level and back-up service support,’ said Andy Hyde, co-director at S&H Plant Hire.
Having evaluated other makes and models, including a demonstration of the new Volvo product, the S&H Plant Hire concluded the EC18C was their choice. ‘The machine is well built, practically strong and robustly engineered,’ continued Mr Hyde. ‘Access to all service points is excellent and the design of the hydraulic system, including the top-mounted boom cylinder is a definite plus, as it minimizes on site damage.’
The new Volvo EC18C is one of four machines (ranging between 1.5 and 2.0 tonnes) that was launched earlier in the year and is a direct replacement for the EC15B XTV model. Powered by a 12.3kW (16.8hp) engine, the compact excavator features automatic two-speed travel and extendable undercarriage as standard. One significant change on the EC18C is that the hydraulic hoses for the digging equipment are now routed through the boom, while the cylinders are top mounted to reduce on site damage.
The two 1.8 tonne-compact excavators supplied to S&H Plant Hire have been fitted with canopies (cab versions are also available). With a maximum digging depth at 2.3m, the EC18C also benefits from a load-sensing hydraulic system for fast cycle times, even when carrying out multiple functions.
A single-piece engine hood provides unobstructed access to all the engine components, while the instrument panel provides at-a-glance monitoring of all key functions. The cab’s easy-to-clean flat floor panel lifts for access to hydraulics and the main control valve.
