Top health and safety awards for CEMEX UK
Company receives MPQC Trophy and ‘highly commended’ accolades at recent MPA Health & Safety Awards
CEMEX UK have been recognized for their outstanding health and safety initiatives, both at company and individual level, at this year’s MPA Health & Safety Awards held at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
The company picked up the Mineral Products Qualification Council (MPQC) Trophy for a series of three training videos; received three ‘highly commended’ status awards for its business initiatives; plus individual recognition for three CEMEX employees.
CEMEX were presented with the MPQC Trophy for producing training films which focused on slips, trips and falls; lock-out tag out; and safe driving, to raise awareness among employees and contractors of the most common causes of injury. The videos feature cartoon characters who, with humour, demonstrate the wrong way of undertaking tasks followed by real-life footage of correct behaviours.
The ‘highly commended’ awards were in acknowledgement of CEMEX’s engineering initiatives at Attenborough Quarry for electrical winch improvements to aid the safe operation of tugs and barges, as well as CEMEX Marine for their innovative solution for reducing the risk of falls from the top of vertical fixed ladders.
The individuals recognized ‘for going that extra mile’ were Chris King, who investigates incidents related to work at height for CEMEX Marine; Bob Stevens, a tipper driver; and Peter Ward, a cement driver who contributed to the company’s training DVD and cyclist safety events.
Chris Leese, vice-president of CEMEX’s Readymix and Mortars division, commented: ‘We must congratulate everyone from CEMEX who has been involved in the many worthwhile projects and initiatives which help to raise the health and safety standards in our workplace and, on this occasion, received recognition for their hard work. We must continue to be vigilant and aim to achieve zero harm.’
