Tarmac maintain top position in asphalt
TARMAC continue to be the largest asphalt company in Great Britain with an estimated market share of around 29%. Aggregate Industries are the second largest company, followed by Hanson, RMC and Lafarge, with the top 10 companies now representing over 90% of the market.
These are some of the conclusions of a new annual report recently published by BDS Marketing & Research Ltd.
According to the report there are still around 45 companies in the industry, which currently produces over 28 million tonnes of asphalt a year. Tarmac are estimated to be the largest asphalt producer in Wales and in an area from the north Midlands to the border with Scotland. Aggregate Industries are the largest in the South West, East Midlands and Scotland. Foster Yeoman have the highest share of the market in the South East.
As well as estimating the outputs of all plants in the country, the report lists plants that have opened or closed, and prepares a market forecast until 2007. Eight asphalt plants have recently opened or are due to open shortly, while five have closed over the same period. The net result of these changes is an increase in industry capacity of around 300,000 tonnes a year.
