Tarmac host woodland-management apprentices
Company’s Panshanger Park plays host to forestry apprentices from Capel Manor College
TARMAC’s Panshanger Park site, in Hertfordshire, recently hosted a group of arboriculture and forestry apprentices from Capel Manor College, to help the students gain practical experience and develop their skills as part of their course.
With a total of 150ha of woodland, the park offers an idyllic environment to help the apprentices from the local college to further their education.
Illustrating Tarmac’s commitment to stewardship credentials and training apprentices, the company has developed a strong relationship with the college in recent years and provides a prize for the best Level 3 countryside student every year.
Tarmac restoration manager Michael Charlton said: ‘Making the park an educational resource is very important to us and central to our long-term vision for the site. Hopefully, the work the apprentices do here will help them to find employment in the future.’
Derek McFarland, deputy head of arboriculture and countryside at Capel Manor College, added: ‘Panshanger Park is an excellent place for our apprentices to develop their skills. It’s important they learn in a real-life environment, where woodland management is central to the sustainability of the wider park.’
As well as supporting Capel Manor College, Tarmac have set up a Forest School at Panshanger Park in partnership with the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. The school, which opened in February 2015, provides an opportunity for school children to develop social and creative skills in a natural environment.
