Super Long Boom Volvo for SUEZ
Waste company’s new loading shovel offers increased load-over height to handle high-sided bulkers
SUEZ recycling and recovery UK have taken delivery of three new Volvo L110H loading shovels, one of which is a Super Long Boom version that has been deployed at the company’s North Tyneside Transfer Station in North Shields.
Replacing a nine-year-old Volvo L120E, this is the first time the company has opted for a Volvo loading shovel with the super-long boom option.
Moreover, this is actually the first Volvo loading shovel to have had its TP loader linkage extended to achieve a bucket pin height of 5.12m, thus allowing it to load high-sided walking-floor trailers with ease.
‘The L110H is the optimum-sized wheeled loader for most of our transfer sites but, in its standard configuration, doesn’t have sufficient load-over height to handle high-sided bulkers,’ commented SUEZ’s technical manager for mobile plant, Malcolm Judd.
‘Volvo demonstrated their ability to come up with an attractive solution for the machine which involved adding 467mm to the boom directly behind the TP linkage.’
In doing so, the overall length of the machine has been increased by just over one metre to 7.54m. The machine has been further enhanced by adding solid wheel and tyre assemblies, allowing it to handle a direct-mounted 4.5 cubic metre capacity high-tip bucket with a rated load of 4,050kg.
Powered by a Tier IV final Volvo 8-litre engine that develops 258hp with a maximum torque of 1,250Nm at 1,450 rev/min, the 19-tonne L110H also benefits from Volvo driveline components, which have been designed to offer considerable fuel savings each shift.
Fuel savings are further enhanced by the Volvo Eco pedal, which encourages the operator to run the machine at its optimum rev/min in the engine’s torque curve.
The machine has also benefitted from additional features which include a hinged bar-type screen guard, guarding for the working lights, an automatic fire-suppression and engine shut-down system, a reversible fan and a wide-core radiator.
Safety features include a white-noise alarm, convex mirrors and rear-view camera. In addition, operators can keep an accurate check on the tonnage being loaded thanks to the installation of an RDS 8000 weigh loader.
The new super-long boom L110H takes over as the prime mover at SUEZ’s North Tyneside transfer station and will be working a minimum of 12 hours a day, seven days a week, handling in excess of 90,000 tonnes per annum of a wide range of materials including domestic and industrial waste, glass, green waste and other recyclables.
