Nigerian success for Finedoor

Jalingo, a 6h drive from Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, is the location of a new quarrying development by ULO Consultants.

Under the guidance of Chief Uche Luke Okpuno, CEO, the company have been awarded a major government contract to develop the infrastructure of two locations, one in Jalingo and the other in Yola. With construction currently in progress at both locations, material was being supplied from a quarry north of Yola, resulting in a haul of around 3h to the Jalingo site. ULO made the decision, therefore, to open a new quarry to ease supply problems to the Jalingo site; this was also helped by the fact that ULO were awarded a contract for the construction of a local airport within the area.

Without any previous experience in quarrying, Chief Okpuno contacted Finedoor for advice on plant selection and assistance in the search for a suitable site. After being awarded the contract for the whole project in the summer of 2005, Finedoor made an exploratory trip to the area to search for a location and advise on all aspects of the project.

Once a suitable site had been found, ULO negotiated a lease for the extraction of material. The site, located east of Jalingo, contains good-quality granite and will provide ULO with material to produce concrete and sub-base road materials. The site had previously been used for quarrying and still retained a wall suitable for the installation of a static crusher. Finedoor produced foundation drawings that were sent to El-Mansur Atelier (EMA), architectural consultants, who finalized the foundation work so that it would fit with the contours of the site; this was necessary due to the complete lack of digging equipment.

Finedoor sourced used crushing equipment from the UK –—a BL-Pegson Maxtrak 1100 x 650 tracked primary crusher and a BL-Pegson Automax 1000 wheeled mobile secondary crusher. All screens and conveyors, including controls, were manufactured by Finedoor and supplied with foundation bolts and a tool kit for general site use.

From the primary crusher, material is fed into the secondary crusher via a surge hopper and then discharged on to a 5m x 2.1m four-deck screen that separates the material into 28–20mm, 20–12mm, 12–6mm and –6mm; a recirculatory conveyor returns any oversize material to the secondary crusher.

The plant was commissioned in January 2006 and built in just one month, often in temperatures of +40°C and under the supervision of one Finedoor engineer.
