New Volvo excavator for John Wainwright & Co Ltd
West Country quarry operator strengthens mobile plant fleet with new Volvo EC750E machine
A NEW 75-tonne Volvo EC750E excavator has been delivered to John Wainwright & Co. Ltd’s Moons Hill Quarry, in Somerset, following a detailed review of the mobile equipment market. The machine was purchased to replace a similar size excavator specifically to clean down exposed faces of blasted basalt at the quarry.
‘We carried out quite a lengthy and detailed review of the marketplace,’ said quarry manager Ben Dormer. ‘We were looking for efficiencies in terms of production and fuel consumption, and a long-reach specification but still with a large enough bucket to load material into our haulers with a reduced number of passes.
‘Equally important in our decision-making process were the robust safety features specified on the machine, along with a competitive commercial package.’
Wainwrights decided to invest in the Volvo EC750E excavator from SMT GB, specifying a 7.7m mass-excavation boom and 3.5m dipper arm with a reach of 12m. Equipped with a 4.0 cubic metre capacity heavy-duty rock bucket, the machine is able to dispatch each of the quarry’s 40-tonne haulers in one less pass than its predecessor.
The EC750E has also been specified with an array of safety features. Most notable is that the left-hand catwalk has full-height guardrails beside the boxing ring skirting the top of the superstructure. Other features include a full fire-suppression system and fast refuelling point that can be accessed from ground level.
The excavator is powered by a 16-litre V-ACT engine (Stage IV-compliant) that develops 533hp and works in conjunction with an advanced-mode control system to ensure the maximum hydraulic horsepower available is delivered at a constant engine speed under varying load conditions.
The machine delivers a maximum torque of 2,570Nm at 1,350 rev/min, while its sophisticated hydraulic system ensures maximum fuel efficiency is achieved through every work cycle.
