New rig helps architectural stone company
A new Marini CID 120 ‘Big-Mast’ drill mast is helping to improve productivity at A.D. Calvert’s Witton Fell Quarry in North Yorkshire. The quarry provides sandstone and gritstone for Calvert’s architectural masonry business, which is involved in construction and renovation projects throughout the UK.
Supplied by Skelair International Ltd, agents in the UK and Ireland for equipment manufactured in Italy by the Marini Quarries Group, ‘Big-Mast’ units are drilling slides that are designed to be mounted on medium- or large-sized excavators. They can be equipped with either pneumatic or hydraulic rotating heads for use with 2in to 6in down-the-hole hammers, or with one or more rotopercussion pneumatic rock drills. The slide can be equipped with articulation for lateral, front and back tipping. Front and back movement is achieved by means of the excavator’s hydraulic cylinder.
The Marini CID 120 supplied to A.D. Calvert, which is being used with an existing Liebherr excavator, is equipped with radio control that allows remote operation from alongside the rig or anywhere in the vicinity. The hydraulic drilling slide has a 3,200mm stroke, a 360º positioning system and is fitted with an MR40 rock drill. Delivered in April 2006, the ‘Big-Mast’ has been used mainly for drill-and-blast operations and reaming, and Calvert say they are very pleased with its performance to date.
