New-look portable compressors

A top-to-toe makeover of component and design features sees the replacement of Atlas Copco’s Series 6 portable compressors with a whole new family of XAS two-wheelers.

The design concept for the Series 7 was initiated to ensure complete compliance with all future legislation concerning OND 2006 standards for 98dB(A) noise levels as well as EPA II and Stage II exhaust emission regulations. A number of specific customer-driven features have also been incorporated.

"The new compressors, which will cover the 35–88 litre/s (74–186cfm), 7 bar (100 lb/in2) range, will be designated: XAHS 37; XAS 47, 57, 67; XATS 67; XAS 77; and XAS 97Dd. The Series 7 has a number of distinguishing features including: reinforced bumpers; strengthened standing legs/jockey wheel; air-filter support; separate filters; higher ground clearance; greater accessibility under the hood; and a redesigned, easy-to-use instrument panel."

"The compressors are powered by Deutz F2M2011 two-cylinder diesel engines for the XAHS 37, XAS 47 and 57Dd models, and the F3M2011 three-cylinder unit for the larger capacity XAS 67, XATS 67, XAS 77 and 97Dd compressors. Both systems are oil cooled to overcome freezing hazards in exposed conditions. An 80-litre fuel tank, feeding the three-cylinder version, provides greater operating autonomy on remote sites."

Compressed-air output is delivered from two types of high-efficiency element — the belt-driven C77 and the C111 direct-drive version. Both the engine units and compressed-air elements are designed for first-service intervals of 500h or one year.

"Externally, a number of design features distinguish the Series 7 compressors from previous Atlas Copco models. The side panels are removable and all service points are located on one side of the compressor. The simple, uncluttered instrument panel is located above the inlet valve and in front of the regulator for the easy operation of pressure settings. The full hood provides total protection and access, while the cassette located in the front baffle makes cleaning the cooler a simpler task. The whole external assembly is Zincor- and powder-coated for maximum weather protection."

"Optional equipment available includes: tow-eye or ball-coupling selection, hose reel, lubricator, aftercooler, air filters, reheaters, anti-frost device, cold-weather operation, toolbox, spillage-free frame, anti-theft chain, and 24V road-light adaptation."

"The Series 7 range incorporates a number of generator variants. These are the simultaneous running, three-phase, 6kW XAS 47DdG and XAS 67DdG, together with the 4kW XAS 36DdG and 12kW XAS 96DdG machines, which are non-simultaneous."
