New Liebherr R 9250 Litronic excavator

A NEW 250-tonne class excavator, the Liebherr R 9250 Litronic, has recently been introduced as a replacement for the successful R 994 Litronic, which has been in production since 1986. Liebherr say technologies already proven in their large mining and quarrying machines have been incorporated in the new excavator, in particular the advanced design of the electronic, electrical and hydraulic systems.

Powered by a 12-cylinder Cummins QSK45 turbocharged diesel engine rated at 960 kW (1,290hp), the standard version of the new R 9250 excavator is equipped with a 9m gooseneck boom, a 4m stick and a 15m³ backhoe bucket, giving the machine a 15.5m reach at ground level, a 10.3m maximum dump height and an 8.7m maximum digging depth.

Offering a 15% larger bucket capacity than the R 994 it replaces, as well as 42% higher swing torque and improved digging capabilities, the R 9250 Litronic is designed to deliver even greater productivity. Only three bucket loads are required to load an 80-tonne dumptruck, while four or five bucket loads will fill a 120-tonne dumptruck. The machine’s maximum digging and breakout force is 780kN and 859kN respectively.

The driver’s cab on the R 9250 Litronic is identical to the well-proven R 996 Litronic in terms of its size, specification and ergonomic design. Fully air-conditioned and equipped with a adjustable driver’s seat and high-quality sound insulation for optimum driver comfort, its generously dimensioned tinted glazing provides a clear view of the work area. In addition, the electro-hydraulic control system ensures optimum response and precision, making the machine easy and safe to operate. The driver is also able to obtain up-to-the-minute operational data via the ergonomically designed display monitor.

Liebherr say improved serviceability was an important goal in the development of the R 9250 Litronic. The engine and pump compartment is spacious and offers easy access to the drive components for maintenance. All service points on the excavator are arranged for easy access and, where possible, are assembled at a central point. For example, the hydraulically activated service panel located at chest height at the rear of the uppercarriage offers optimum access to the service points for lubricants, various oils, windscreen washer fluid, oil change, and for fuel.

The launch of the R 9250 Litronic adds a new model designation to Liebherr’s mining and quarrying excavator programme. The initial ‘9’ continues to be the product identifier number for hydraulic excavators, but this is now followed by a three-digit number representing the operating weight category for the particular excavator.
