New JCB mini-excavators

JCB are introducing two new zero tail swing (ZTS) mini-excavators for the 4–5-tonne sector - the 8040ZTS and the 8045ZTS.

The 4.3-tonne 8040ZTS model, specified to suit European markets, has also been designed to target North America and Australia where this type of product is gaining wider appeal. The 4.75-tonne 8045ZTS, the volume model for the European market, is aimed at plant hirers, contractors, utility firms and owner operators. JCB say that it has the performance levels to compete against both zero and conventional tail swing mini-excavators in the sub 5-tonne class.

Powered by Tier II engines delivering 34kW, both models have high digging performances and bucket tear out forces that are said to outperform even conventional models in the class. The maximum digging depth on the 8040ZTS is 3.3m, while a longer dipper arm on the 8045ZTS gives it a maximum digging depth of 3.5m.

The undercarriage configuration provides a stable digging platform when working in all directions and allows good manoeuvrability. Both models benefit from a smooth ride, a top speed of 5.5km/h and tractive efforts of 48kN and 55kN respectively. This tracking performance also provides high productivity in dozing applications, aided by JCB’s dozer blade design.

The ergonomically designed cab features a seat and control pod assembly that is fully suspended, so as the seat is adjusted, the controls move too. The hose routing is positioned on top of the boom so there is nothing to impede the view of the excavator end. This is enhanced by a large front screen that allows a clear view of the load, even at full dump height. The cab is isolated from the upper structure of the machine, reducing noise and vibration. Factory-fitted air-conditioning is available as an option.

Engine speed is set via a right-hand-mounted electronic throttle and an auto-idle function returns the engine to idle speed after 4s if no service is activated. The moment any service is operated, the engine automatically returns to the pre-set speed.

All the controls are servo-operated for precise and low-effort operation. Track levers are fitted as standard with fold-up-style pedals.

The machines use a fully load-sensing system that ensures that whatever loads are placed on the machine it will deliver optimum performance. An additional benefit of the load-sensing hydraulics is straight line tracking, which allows the operator to travel forward or backwards safely, without veering to the side when a service is operated.

Service intervals are at 500h and for ease of maintenance the engine is mounted on the side with easy access to the air and fuel filter, oil dipstick, water top-up, starter motor, alternator and hydraulic pump. The main excavator valve block is housed under the rear bonnet, also with easy access. Engine and hydraulic oil cooling packages are positioned side-by-side for easy
cleaning.
