New guidance on asphalt road pavements and overlays

A THREE-year project at TRL, commissioned and supported by the Highways Agency, Quarry Products Association and Refined Bitumen Association, has resulted in the publication of two new guidance documents: ‘Best-practice guide for overlaying concrete’ (TRL Road Note 41); and ‘Best-practice guide for durability of asphalt pavements’ (TRL Road Note 42).

The two documents provide guidance and advice on design, materials and construction, and are presented as sister publications in the same format for ease of use.

Road Note 41 identifies the different techniques for overlaying concrete pavements and bridges with asphalt, assists in the choice of treatment for specific situations, and gives advice on how to maximize the durability of the treatments.

Road Note 42 gives guidance on the procedures for maximizing the durability of asphalt pavements, and is linked to the Department for Transport’s Specification for Highways
Works.

‘Best practice guide for overlaying concrete’ (ISBN 978-1-84608-717-2) and ‘Best practice guide for durability of asphalt pavements’ (ISBN: 978-1-84608-709-7) are both priced at: £45.00. For more information, visit: www.trl.co.uk, or call TRL on tel: (01344) 328167.
