New FE electric tipper spearheads Volvo Trucks debut at Hillhead

Volvo FE Electric tipper

Volvo Trucks to showcase the UK’s first fully operational electric tipper on their stand

This is the first time the Swedish manufacturer is exhibiting at the event. Visitors will be able to get a close-up look at the Volvo FE Electric 6x2 rigid, that will be joined on stand U15 by Volvo’s popular FMX 460 8x4 tipper and the Volvo FH with I-Save tractor unit.

The battery-powered tipper has recently been put into service at Fox Group, as one of two identical trucks for the Lancashire firm and the first of its kind to be delivered anywhere in the UK.

The Volvo FE Electric is plated at 27-tonnes – one tonne more than a standard three-axle rigid – which helps to offset the additional weight of the batteries. Mounted with Thompsons tipper bodywork, it will operate primarily on local contracts for customers such as Lancashire County Council, being used to move materials to and from construction sites, before returning to base each night to be recharged.

It features a day cab, full air suspension and a hydraulically-steered rear axle for exceptional manoeuvrability – perfect when operating in urban areas or accessing building sites with restricted access – and is decked out in striking new Fox Group livery, highlighting its green credentials.

The powertrain consists of two electric motors and a two-speed gearbox, with power being generated by an electric motor with an output of 400kW. The truck can use different drive modes to help set the desired performance, comfort and energy usage levels.

Alongside the FE Electric at Hillhead will be Volvo’s FMX, fitted with a Thompsons steel tipping body built for demolition and muckaway operations. The latest version of the FMX is designed for the toughest conditions and most demanding assignments, featuring an entirely new cab, increased payload potential and innovative safety features.

Complementing them will be the Volvo FH with I-Save 6x2 tractor unit – said to be the most fuel efficient 44-tonner on the market today and a popular choice for articulated tipper and tanker operators across the UK and Ireland.
