New Dash-8 excavators from Komatsu
Komatsu have recently launched three new hydraulic excavators in the 20–30-tonne range with a special cab designed to protect the operator in case of roll-over. The PC210-8, PC240-8 and PC290-8 also feature Komatsu’s Komtrax tracking system and a large-screen, video-capable monitor. The machines have been designed to deliver low fuel consumption and interior noise levels similar to a family car.
The new machines include a brand new cab developed specifically for hydraulic excavators. Its tubular steel frame is highly durable and designed to provide the maximum protection for the operator if the machine should ever roll over. Tests have shown that even if the machine rolls down a slope, the operator will remain unharmed. In addition, the cab includes all Komatsu’s standard SpaceCab features, including a spacious working environment, fully adjustable air-suspension seat, low-vibration cab mounting and air-conditioning.
The new cab design also contributes to the low interior noise level. For the PC210-8, the noise at the operator’s ear is just 69dB(A), which Komatsu claim makes the PC210-8 the quietest machine in its class for the operator.
Fuel consumption is also significantly reduced, due to a highly efficient engine and closely matched hydraulic unit. The operator can choose between two working modes according to the job being carried out. This ensures that sufficient power is available for heavy-duty use while minimizing fuel consumption during lighter tasks. In addition, the Eco-gauge and idle-caution features help the operator work in the most fuel-efficient manner. These features are clearly displayed on an 18cm LCD monitor, making it easy for the operator to monitor all machine functions and display data in any of 10 languages. The monitor is video compatible and can be used with an optional camera system to provide a view of the rear of the vehicle.
To help minimize maintenance times and increase productivity, the excavators feature Komatsu’s Komtrax satellite tracking system, which allows remote monitoring and location of the machines during operation. This in turn allows mechanics to arrive at the site fully prepared for any maintenance or repairs that may be required.
All three machines are powered by Komatsu’s new ECOT3 engines, which have been designed to reduce exhaust emissions and increase fuel efficiency. The engines meet EU Stage IIIA emissions regulations which, for the PC210-8, is one year ahead of European legislation.
