Mannok pick up prestigious SEAI Energy Award
Company wins Large Business category for its large strides in sustainable energy practices
MANNOK have won the Large Business category at the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) Energy Awards, which recognize and reward excellence in all aspects of energy efficiency and renewable energy.
This year’s ceremony in Dublin saw a total of 12 awards presented to individuals, businesses, communities, and public sector organizations in recognition of their commitment and dedication to sustainable energy and climate action. Some 36 finalists were selected by expert judging panels for consideration as category winners.
Selecting Mannok as winners of the Large Business category, the SEAI judges commented: ‘Mannok is an experienced manufacturer of construction products and consumer packaging. Mannok have made large strides in sustainable energy practices. As part of their ‘Mannok 2030 Vision’, they aim to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 35% by 2030.
‘Achievements include Fuel Flex technology, displacing 40,000 tonnes of coal with alternative fuels and reducing emissions by 58,000 tonnes/CO2e each year, saving nearly €12 million.
‘They plan to decrease emissions by another 49,000 tonnes/CO2e. Initiatives include a burner upgrade and process optimizations. Mannok’s ‘Energy Valley Concept’ has a 15-year plan to develop renewable energy assets, including green hydrogen, solar PV, and wind.
‘They have combined innovation, collaboration, and effective energy management to contribute to national and international goals, positioning them as a model for decarbonization in hard-to-abate industries.’
Damian Owens, Mannok energy co-ordinator, said: ‘We were delighted to pick up the award, especially with the quality of companies that were included in the finalists list for the award. Cement is recognized as a hard-to-abate industry for decarbonization but it is something that Mannok are putting a lot of resources and effort into achieving.
‘Sustainability and energy efficiency are now a big part of what we do at Mannok and we are undertaking a number of projects within the cement plant to help us meet our goals.’
Congratulating the winners, William Walsh, chief executive officer of SEAI, said: ‘Today’s finalists are exemplars for us all of how we can accelerate the energy transition, using technologies and solutions available now.
‘Across all of this year’s submissions, the quality and imagination were inspiring, from seemingly simple changes to major innovations. We celebrate the businesses, communities, organizations, and individuals who are leading by example. Together we are moving the dial on Ireland’s clean energy transition. SEAI is proud to recognize and applaud their dedication and innovation.’
