Leadership in Health and Safety

THE Health and Safety Executive’s Manufacturing Sector is to present a highly practical one-day programme on how to achieve effective leadership in health and safety for directors and chief executive officers of manufacturing organizations. The event will take place on 29 March 2007 at Pride Park Stadium, home of Derby County Football Club.

This specialist event will demonstrate: why leadership in health and safety needs to be a proactive process that requires effort from the top from the outset; the components of good leadership in health and safety; different approaches for large and small companies; a personal accident history caused by a lack of leadership, what went wrong and how change was effected; the leadership practiced by the directors and management at Leyland Trucks and the positive changes that resulted; and the effects of good leadership through the eyes of middle management, the shop floor and the trade unions.

Among the speakers at the event will be: Geoffrey Podger, chief executive of the HSE; Prof. Peter McKie, former managing director of DuPont UK and now chairman of HSE Northern Ireland; Frank Carrano of Castle Cement; and John McClean of the GMB union.

James Barrett, head of the HSE’s Manufacturing Sector, said: ‘We believe that taking away the best practice messages from this one-day programme and applying them in their own companies, business leaders can significantly improve their company’s performance both in health and safety and financial terms.’
