Hanson show the future in 3D
Hanson Aggregates are now able to create highly realistic 3D visualizations of extraction sites thanks to a new generation of digital aerial mapping. Using digital terrain data and aerial photography supplied by Intermap Technologies and BlueSky, Hanson are creating computer fly-throughs of proposed sites that can be viewed on-screen from any direction to give a realistic view of a future landscape.
The BlueSky aerial photography is taken from the Millennium Map, the aerial survey that covers every inch of England, Wales and much of Scotland. This is draped over highly accurate elevation data taken from NEXTMap Britain, the 3D digital map that plots sub-metre accurate elevations captured from Intermap’s nationwide radar mapping survey. The drape models can be output as stand-alone files and sent to various organizations to give a preview of Hanson’s proposals.
With more than 100 sand, gravel and rock quarries throughout the UK, the company are using the 3D computer models to work out extraction volumes, plan operations and make environmental impact assessments. The new type of interactive fly-through visualizations show extraction sites in the ‘real world’ and, according to Hanson, are invaluable for public consultations and landscape planning.
‘With the aerial photography and terrain data, we can simply buy the data we need for any site literally off the shelf from BlueSky. It opens up all sorts of opportunities for doing work that was simply not viable before,’ said Daniel O’Brien, senior geologist at Hanson.
‘By creating real-life 3D imagery, we can show planners and residents the view of an extraction site from anywhere. We can even provide fly-throughs from any direction and show changes over time as extraction and restoration progresses. Many myths are dispelled when people actually see the proposals in a 3D format, and in most cases fears are allayed, which is very important to us.’
