Grange Quarries choose Avery Weigh-Tronix

An on-board weighing system from Avery Weigh-Tronix ensures that Grange Quarries Ltd avoids overloading their tippers and helps to improve their process efficiency.

While the site has weighbridges to ensure compliance with overloading legislation, this is inconvenient since the weighing does not occur while the trailers are loaded. In the past an overloaded vehicle would have to return to site and remove some of its load, which is time consuming.

Using the on-board weighing system means that Grange Quarries can weigh the tippers as they are loaded. This improves efficiency by removing guesswork during loading and also ensures that each tipper can be filled to a maximum capacity without overloading.

Reliability was an important factor in specifying the Avery Weigh-Tronix system. In common with other quarries the on-board weighing system must cope with an extremely harsh environment. Both the load-cells and cabling are underneath the vehicle and therefore face dust, mud, water and other debris.

Fitted to two 20-tonne tippers plus a tipping trailer by Boweld Truck Bodies, each tipper typically completes seven loads a day. Downtime is expensive and could cost the business £1,260 in lost loads per vehicle per day. The tipping trailer attaches to the tippers and the on-board weighing system from this simply plugs into the main trailer and control system.

Stuart Dodd, managing director of Grange Quarries, commented: ‘On-board weighing has improved the efficiency of our deliveries. Operating in a quarry means that any system has to be robust and reliable. Together with Boweld we decided that the Avery Weigh-Tronix system was the best-engineered and most reliable system currently available.’
