Two new Volvo FH Electric 6x2 tractor units help drive down waste haulage company’s carbon footprint

FRED Sherwood Transport have taken delivery of two brand-new 44-tonne Volvo FH Electric 6x2 tractor units as part of their sustainability ambitions. The company – part of the wider Fred Sherwood Group – will pair the zero-tailpipe emission trucks with specially designed walking floor trailers, from Titan Trailers, for waste and recycling operations in and around its main headquarters in Shepshed, Leicestershire.

Justin Sherwood, director at Fred Sherwood Group, said: ‘We are working hard towards our sustainability ambitions – that’s the reason we have gone down the electric route. Volvo Trucks are a long and trusted partner to our business, and they have supported us at every step of this process.

‘These two FH Electrics are exciting additions to our fleet. We have the right routes to make electric work and look forward to seeing how they bed in. They are already drawing a lot of interest from our customers, who are keen to understand how they can help them to hit their own green targets.’

Supplied by Hartshorne Group, the FH Electrics are equipped with six batteries and provide an approximate range of 300km. Each vehicle is driven by three electric motors, capable of generating 666hp and 2,400Nm of continuous torque.

They are also equipped with the standard I-Shift gearbox and spacious Globetrotter cab, which incorporates Volvo’s Drive++ package, adding an array of comfort features such as leather upholstery, dual armrests on both seats, an adjustable steering wheel with neck tilt, and an under-bunk mounted 33-litre fridge.

Road safety is enhanced through Volvo’s Lane Departure Warning systems and adaptive cruise control with Forward Collision Warning and emergency braking. Volvo Trucks have supplied the FH units with two wall-box AC 43kW chargers, which Fred Sherwood plan to power using solar panels installed on their workshop roof.

The new Volvo FH Electrics are backed by a comprehensive five-year Volvo Gold Contract, delivering full cost control, worry-free ownership, and maximum uptime by covering all maintenance and repairs, including proactive monitoring of batteries and associated components.
