Defra releases landfill guidance

The final piece of the guidance connected with the change of regime to the Environmental Permitting (EP) system designed to streamline permitting and compliance, which comes into force on 6 April, has been released by Defra.

The 97page Environmental Permitting Core Guidance: The Landfill Directive document accompanies the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2007 and is split into four chapters each covering separate topics.

Topics include setting a definition of a landfill under the Directive, the requirements of the Directive and how they will be delivered through environmental permits and other Directive requirements relevant to environmental permitting.

Launched on 5 March, the guidance’s release coincides with the launch of the second phase of the EP programme. Defra says it expects these regulations to come into force 2008-2010 if its proposals are supported.
