Dam Soft
Highland Quality Construction Ltd (HQC), have utilized a low-ground-pressure Komatsu PC160LGP-7 tracked excavator, supplied by Marubeni-Komatsu, to cope with the extremely soft ground conditions encountered at the Glendoe Hydro Project, near Fort Augustus, in Scotland.
Fitted with 1,400mm extra-wide tracks (pictured right) – double the width of standard tracks – the machine was able to work in areas that were not even accessible on foot. HQC say this was key to the initial construction work, which began in 2006, as it allowed a 45km network of roads to be built and provided access to numerous on-site borrow pits, from which a total of 2 million tonnes of rock was extracted. On completion of the working areas, the Komatsu PC160LGP-7 was used for restoration purposes, effectively replacing up to 8m of peat it had earlier removed.
