Corporate Manslaughter conviction for SR & RJ Brown
Company fined £300,000 and ordered to publish notice of its conviction following death of an employee
SR & RJ Brown Ltd, agricultural and groundworks contractors based in Bury, Lancashire, have been convicted of an offence of Corporate Manslaughter contrary to Section 1 of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, and of two related offences under the Work at Height Regulations 2005.
The offences arose out of the death of company employee Benjamin Edge on 10 December 2014 at Fletcher Bank Quarry, near Ramsbottom, Greater Manchester. Mr Edge died as a result of falling from the roof of a building that was being dismantled.
SR & RJ Brown Ltd admitted that they had failed to take reasonable care for the safety of their employee and, in particular, that they had failed to provide adequate equipment or method of working for work at height.
The company, which pleaded guilty to the offence in proceedings at Manchester Crown Court, was fined a total of £300,000 and ordered to pay £15,833 towards prosecution costs. The company was also ordered by the Court to publish notice of its conviction.
