Company says sizeable development will support county’s progress towards Net Zero

CEMEX have announced plans for investments in a sizeable development of their UK cement plant in Rugby, Warwickshire, which will ensure the plant plays its part in reducing emissions across the West Midlands, whilst demonstrating the business’s commitment to the region.

The investments will allow the plant to make use of materials in the final milling stage that improve the sustainability of the cement product and will also provide enhanced milling capacity and deliver other improvements to the site’s manufacturing capabilities.

The changes will result in a reduction of CO2 per tonne of cement produced at Rugby, marking a further step in Cemex’s journey towards operating as a net-zero business globally by 2050.

Cemex say the project establishes the company’s long-term confidence in the region and represents a considerable investment in the local, regional and national economy, and the ability of the construction industry to support continued economic growth. The planning application for the scheme is expected to be submitted during June 2023.

Phil Baynes-Clarke, director of cement operations for Cemex UK, commented: ‘Cemex are a major employer and investor across the West Midlands, and we are proud to be based here. Our Rugby cement plant is home to the largest cement kiln in the country, and this planned investment will benefit our customers, the region and the wider environment.

‘Climate change is a major issue for us all and this project represents a further step on the continued journey to reduce CO2 in every tonne of cement we produce.’

Cemex acknowledge the role that the private sector must make alongside the West Midlands Combined Authority to ensure the region achieves Net Zero. Last year, the company signed up to the West Midlands Net Zero Business Pledge, becoming one of the largest organizations to have done this so far.
