CEMEX pave Egypt’s first concrete highway

Concrete highway

Company supplies 130,000 cubic metres of concrete for Cairo–Suez highway project

CEMEX have contributed to the paving of Egypt’s first concrete highway. The 22-mile (35km) road connects the capital, Cairo, with the seaport city of Suez, two of the nation’s most important economic centres.

CEMEX, who supplied 130,000 cubic metres of concrete for the Cairo–Suez highway, say this paving solution offers this country a number of advantages over traditional asphalt roads, including greater durability, higher tolerance, better visibility – especially at night – superior resistance to severe weather, lower periodic maintenance, and greater road safety.

Although CEMEX have successfully applied concrete technology to other roads around the world, it is new to Egypt and was achieved as a result of multiple concrete initiatives over a period of several years.

Beginning in 2011, CEMEX in Egypt demonstrated the beneficial characteristics of concrete paving to Egypt’s General Authority of Roads and Bridges by working closely with the private sector on several pavement projects. Following three years of workshops, studies and deliberations with the General Authority, CEMEX were finally granted permission to initiate the Cairo-Suez project.

‘We are very proud to have paved Egypt’s first concrete highway and contributed to the development of the country,’ said CEMEX Egypt country manager Ramon Piza. ‘We believe the future of Egypt has to be built with sustainable and environment-friendly solutions.’
