Caterpillar introduce new D4 dozer

The new Cat D4 dozer features a lower sloping hood line that provides improved visibility

Latest machine offers enhanced visibility and productivity-boosting features

CATERPILLAR have launched the new D4 (formerly D6K2) dozer, which is said to take smooth grading performance to the next level with improved sight lines, reduced operating costs and a broad range of technology features to help increase machine productivity.

Incorporating a lower sloping hood line, the D4 provides up to 30% better visibility to the area in front of the blade. The shorter sight lines mean the visual distance between the blade and material pile is shortened by around 40%, so less time is spent backing up to get a full view of the material.

According to Caterpillar, the D4 dozer, powered by a Stage V emission-compliant Cat C4.4 engine (130hp), has several industry-leading standard technology features aimed at helping operators work more efficiently, regardless of experience level.

These include: Slope Indicate, which shows machine mainfall and cross-slope on the main display for easy reference; Stable Blade, which works seamlessly with operator blade inputs for smoother surfaces; Cat Grade with Slope Assist, which provides basic blade positioning assistance without added hardware or a GPS signal; and Traction Control, which automatically reduces track slip to save time, fuel and track wear.

The D4 can also be equipped with the factory Attachment Ready Option (ARO), which provides optimal mounting locations, brackets and hardware whilst simplifying installation of any brand of grade control system.

Customers can also add the factory-integrated Cat Grade with 3D system, which uses a GPS signal to automatically adjust blade movements – both lifting and tilting – as the operator follows the design plan. Antennas and receivers are housed in a low-profile roof-mounted spoiler.

For ease of operation, an intuitive 10in Grade operator interface – which works similar to a smartphone – helps to make it easy for operators to pick up quickly. The Android operating system platform allows installation of custom apps for more versatility.

AutoCarry is also packaged with the Grade with 3D system, automating blade lift to help provide more consistent blade loads with each pass and reduce track slip.

With the capability of installing third-party 3D grade systems from Trimble, Topcon and Leica, the D4 dozer can easily integrate into jobsites with existing grading technology infrastructures.

The machine can also help take the complexity out of managing job sites by gathering data generated by equipment, materials and people and serving it up in customizable formats, thanks to the use of Cat Link telematics technologies such as Product Link, VisionLink and Remote Troubleshoot.

The D4 is available in standard or low ground pressure (LGP) configurations, with a variety of blade and guarding options to optimize the dozer for its intended application.
