Bruel & Kjaer introduce safe version noise dose meter
Bruel & Kjaer, manufacturers of noise and vibration measurement equipment, have launched an ‘intrinsically safe’ version of their Type 4445E noise dose meter (pictured above). Since 2003 all noise dose meters used within hazardous/volatile environments have had to have ATEX approval.
The company’s latest model meets the requirements associated with the ATEX certification codes EEx ia I M1 and EEx ia IIC T4 II 1 G, making it suitable for use in hazardous areas.
The 4445E noise dose meter, worn with a microphone fastened close to the ear, measures the sound pressure level and calculates the so-called ‘noise dose’ received by the worker during the day.
The noise dose is expressed as an equivalent average sound level for an 8h period and must fall below the limit (or criterion level) specified in the relevant occupational health regulations – an 87dB limit should not be exceeded.
The 4445E can be used with Bruel & Kjaer’s Protector Software on a PC, giving users a host of valuable post-measurement facilities, including data comparisons and statistical analysis.
The software also offers data logging, so noise measurements can be stored over an extended period of time. A range of information can be added to the saved results, such as frequency and times when noise levels are excessive, which will help users link noise problems to specific processes or events throughout the day.
Data logging can be carried out automatically; the user enters the date and time for the measurement to begin, before switching the noise meter on, and then leaving the instrument unattended until it is switched off.
