Breedon now fourth largest ready-mix company
BDS Marketing Research publish latest annual report on the ready-mixed concrete industry
FOLLOWING their recent acquisition of Hope Construction Materials, Breedon are now the fourth largest ready-mixed concrete company in Great Britain. They also operate more concrete plants than any other company in the industry.
These are some of the conclusions of BDS Marketing Research’s latest annual report on the ready mixed-concrete industry, entitled: ‘Estimated market shares of ready-mixed concrete companies in Great Britain’.
Hanson continue to be the largest concrete suppliers, followed by CEMEX and Tarmac. Together with Breedon, Aggregate Industries make up the top five, and BDS estimate that these businesses represent two thirds of the market.
‘The rest of the industry is represented by around 400 batch and volumetric companies,’ said the report’s author, Andy Sales. ‘It is the smaller companies that are most active in developing new plants. Over the last year, we have picked up nearly 30 planning consents for new plants. All but four of these were made by independent companies.’
The report estimates the market shares of all companies in the industry, by county, regionally and nationally. As well as providing a three-year forecast, it identifies plants and companies that have both closed and opened over the past 12 months.
On a regional basis, Hanson were found to be the largest concrete suppliers in southern England, Wales and the North West, while Breedon were identified as the largest suppliers in the Midlands, Yorkshire and Scotland.
BDS say the ready-mixed concrete market is currently enjoying some much-needed growth following the recession and is expected to increase by around 6% in 2016. The consultancy expects this trend to continue, although at lower levels. Its forecast is for growth of around 10% up to the end of the decade.
