Biffa claim top spot in landfill

FOLLOWING their recent acquisition of UK Waste, Biffa are now believed to be the largest landfill company in the country, with a national market share estimated at 12.1%. Shanks Group, despite having increased their market share to 10.8%, have been pushed into second place.

These are the headline findings of BDS Marketing & Research Ltd's latest annual report on the waste industry.

The report also identifies Waste Recycling Group as the third largest landfill company, with the top three companies now estimated to have a share of over 30% of all landfilled waste.

BDS say the report confirms the consolidation of the waste industry in recent years. In 1997, when the report was first published, the top 10 companies represented only 48% of the market. Today that figure has risen to an estimated 62%. BDS expect further consolidation in the future, although not at the pace of recent years.

In terms of total volumes, the consultancy identified a decline in the amount of demolition and construction waste landfilled. This is thought to have fallen by over one third since the introduction of the landfill tax. Volumes of household and industrial/commercial waste increased slightly in 1999.
