Barrington a Cemex in-house H&S winner
Cemex’s Cambridgeshire-based Barrington cement works has beaten global competition from within the materials group to three major gongs for reducing health and safety incidents.
Boasting four years without a lost time injury, Barrington scooped best in class out of the company’s 15 cement operations globally as well as best in sector and overall national winner in the UK.
Over the past eight years Barrington has only had one lost time injury thanks to an emphasis on changing people’s habits and encouraging them to stop and think before they carry out tasks.
During 2007, staff identified four key areas of improvement, including site housekeeping, slips, trips and falls, manual handling and the ‘get a grip’ campaign about always having three points of contact – this also helped Cemex win the 2007 QPA overall excellence in H&S award at the association's annual H&S Oscars.
Barrington staff were awarded with a ceremonial sword by Cemex’s UK president Gonzalo Galindo. It has been presented on an annual basis since 1996 for H&S excellence.
