Restoration award for WBB Minerals

"WBB Minerals have been praised by Surrey County Council for the restoration of their 14ha Spynes Mere site, east of their Redhill quarry."

"Surrey County Council made five awards to mineral and waste companies who have, in its opinion, provided examples of best practice in Surrey. The awards celebrate the launch of a new series of best-practice planning documents by the council."

"The WBB site is a former silica sand quarry that has been restored to a wetland nature reserve to be leased to the Surrey Wildlife Trust. Although the site has only recently been restored it is already attracting waterfowl and supports six nationally rare species of bee which are dependent on sandy ground. It will also contribute to bio-diversity targets for species like the water vole and great crested newt, both of which are found in the area."

"Simon Elson of Surrey County Council said: ‘We were impressed with the way WBB Minerals worked in partnership with the local community, as well as their consideration of the wider picture of all their sites and how restoration plans can be brought together. By doing so, they have provided an opportunity for four adjoining sites to be linked together in the future to create one large nature reserve. We also felt that WBB Minerals demonstrated best practice in the preparation of their management plan for the site. This plan, which sets out the long-term management objectives for the reserve, also clearly outlines how the management steering group, which includes representatives from the mineral company, parish council, local residents, Surrey Wildlife Trust and the Environment Agency, would be created and operated.’"
