Recycling contractor receives custom-built excavator from Hyundai
A special custom-built, crawler-mounted excavator is among the first batch of Hyundai machines to be delivered in the South West by new dealers Molson-Hyundai.
Acquired by recycling contractors Smiths (Gloucester) Ltd, the18-tonne Robex R1807A excavator – which has been specially modified with a hydraulic elevating cab and a German-built Kinshofer five-tine orange-peel grab – is being used to sort and load incoming material at Smiths’ Avonmouth waste-transfer station, which handles around 2,000 tonnes of waste per day, collected from the Bristol area.
The facility is one of three waste depots in the company’s waste handling division, all feeding its main recycling and processing plant at Moreton Valen, near Gloucester.
‘We chose Hyundai because we needed a large and specifically configured machine to meet the increasing volume of waste material being handled at the Avonmouth site, and Molson-Hyundai were able to come up with exactly the right spec,’ said Allan Bennett, division manager of the Smiths Group.
‘We wanted a crawler-mounted machine for stability during loading, and for easy and frequent repositioning inside the sorting shed.’
The Avonmouth depot receives a wide variety of waste from the demolition, industrial, commercial and construction sectors. The R1807A excavator, with an outreach of 8m and its special sorting grab, can quickly select and load different materials into segregated hoppers and large-capacity wagons.
The machine’s elevated cab allows the operator to see clearly into the high-sided vehicle bodies, providing fast and efficient operation. In addition, with the operator raised well above the loading area, a major health and safety benefit is that there is no risk of any material spillage on to the cab.
