National honours for NSSGA members

NSSGA awards

Association recognizes the achievements of outstanding operations in the US and Canada

THE National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA) has recognized the achievements of several outstanding aggregates operations in the US and Canada with the awarding of national honours for their extraordinary commitment to safety, environmental stewardship and community involvement in 2015.

Michael W. Johnson, NSSGA president and CEO, said: ‘It is our pleasure every year to highlight these companies for their innovative ideas and programmes that improve safety, efficiency and relationships with their community and neighbours. We encourage our members to share their best practices and new ideas throughout the year so that our entire profession continues to improve operations and community relations.’

The Gold level recipients of NSSGA’s Safety, Environmental and Community Relations Excellence Awards are shown below (for a full list of Gold, Silver and Bronze recipients, visit the NSSGA website). A Platinum Award will be awarded to one company from the Environment and Community Relations categories live at NSSGA’s 2016 Annual Convention and AGG1 Academy & Expo in Nashville, Tennessee, on 21 March 2016.

Stars of Excellence
The National Stars of Excellence are awarded to operations that accumulate Gold Awards in Safety, Environmental and Community Relations over a five-year period. The recipients are: Acton Quarry, Dufferin Aggregates (Environmental Gold 2012, Community Relations 2015); and Beckmann Quarry, Martin Marietta (Environmental Gold 2013, Community Relations Gold 2015).

Safety Excellence Gold Award recipients
The Safety Excellence programme was created in 1987 to promote safe working conditions and practices, and to recognize, on an annual basis, individual operations with exemplary safety records among NSSGA member companies.

Safety Excellence Awards recognize individual operations that have gone the longest duration without a reportable injury in their size category, based on data provided by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

The recipients are: Small – Southington Sand and Gravel Pit, Tilcon Connecticut (a division of Martin Marietta); Medium – Abilene Black Lease, Vulcan Materials; Large – Dalton Quarry, Vulcan Materials.

Sterling Safety Gold Award recipients
The Sterling Safety Award was created in 1994 to recognize the companies that have the lowest total accident incidence rate for the previous year in their category among NSSGA members. Sterling Awards recognize member companies that achieve the lowest injury incidence rate for the previous calendar year (2015) in their size category, based on data provided by the MSHA.

The recipients are: Small – Iddings Quarry Inc.; Medium – Anchor Stone Co.; Large – Martin Marietta.

Environmental Excellence Gold Award recipients
The Environmental Excellence Awards programme was created in 1992 to provide national recognition for aggregate producers that meet and exceed technical, environmental and regulatory requirements. The gold award is given to the top 10% of facilities receiving the highest score from NSSGA’s selected group of independent judges.

The recipients are: Ardmore Quarry, Lehigh Hanson; Ashland Sand & Gravel, Aggregate Industries; Bullitt County Stone, Rogers Group; Charlotte Quarry, Martin Marietta; Jamesville Quarry, Lehigh Hanson; Meyer Material Company, Aggregate Industries; and South Russellville Quarry, Vulcan Materials.

Excellence in Community Relations Gold Award Recipients
The Excellence in Community Relations programme was created in 1989 to recognize aggregate producers whose community involvement and support activities have enhanced the public’s perception of the aggregates industry and the public image of the individual producer’s aggregate operation in particular. The gold award is given to the top 10% of facilities receiving the highest score from NSSGA’s selected group of independent judges.

The recipients are: Acton Quarry, Dufferin Aggregates; Beckmann Quarry, Martin Marietta; Dixie Lee Quarry, Vulcan Materials; Franklin Quarry, Vulcan Materials; Hilsboro Quarry, Rogers Group; and Shelly Materials East Fultonham, The Shelly Co, (a division of Oldcastle Inc.).

Platinum awards
Two operations were recognized with Platinum Awards of Excellence during this week’s NSSGA Annual Convention and AGG1 Academy & Expo in Nashville, Tennessee. These awards are the highest recognition that a single quarry can receive for community outreach and sustainable practices.

Dufferin Aggregates’ Acton Quarry was presented with the 2015 Platinum Award for Excellence in Community Relations, and Bullitt County Stone picked up the 2015 Platinum Award for Environmental Excellence.

‘These are two truly stand-out operations for their dedication to their communities and the environment. Both have implemented innovative programmes and raised the bar for the industry as a whole,’ said NSSGA president and CEO Michael W. Johnson.
