Monitran vibration switch module
Launched earlier this year to replace the VS0003, the VS0004 from Monitran is a condition-monitoring and alarm module, capable of raising alarms and shutting down equipment in the event of increasing vibration levels on plant machinery.
The module has two alarms levels: Alarm 1, which can be set between 1-50mm/s; and Alarm 2, which can be set as a multiple of Alarm 1 levels.
Bob Pickard, technical director at Monitran, explained: ‘One option that users have is to use Alarm 1 to sound an alarm and use Alarm 2, with its higher limits, to shut down equipment. In addition, the VS0004 has a 4-20mA output scaled to Alarm 2, so it can be interfaced with PLCs and other control circuitry.’
The module contains a double-pole, double-throw relay for each alarm level, and the user effectively wires to the normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) contacts depending on what action is to be taken when an alarm limit is reached. The switching capability of each relay is 8A at 240V AC or 30V DC.
Some of the key features of the VS0004 are a 10s ‘alarm on time’ function and a 30s start-up delay, as Mr Pickard commented: ‘The start-up delay is of particular benefit if the unit is attached to machinery that generally shakes during power up. Without this delay feature, operators would face false alarms.’
The VS0004 measures 80mm x 125mm x 82mm and is sealed in a die-cast aluminium enclosure. The unit is available with latching or non-latching indicators. On the latching version, a reset button is present and the alarm LEDs remain illuminated after vibration levels have fallen below their corresponding limits,
