Langford plays host to RSPB

Tarmac welcome RSPB National Board of Council members to flagship partnership site in the Midlands 

TARMAC welcomed the RSPB’s National Board of Council members to their Langford sand and gravel site, near Newark, in Nottinghamshire, for their annual study weekend.

Every year the UK Council of the RSPB holds a special study weekend in an area of high nature conservation importance. This year, they visited the Midlands region where they were looking at landscape and area-based approaches to nature conservation, and the role of partnership working.

As a major part of the weekend, the RSPB group, comprising RSPB Council members, their chief executive, Dr Mike Clarke, and their Management Board, visited Tarmac’s Langford Quarry.

A full tour of the flagship Tarmac/RSPB partnership site was conducted by Tarmac and RSPB site staff, with particular attention being paid to the recently configured restoration work that landscaped over 300,000 tonnes of material to establish priority reed-bed habitat in 2011.

The more established areas of the developing reserve are already a significant area of nature conservation, with the partnership project successfully attracting the bittern and marsh harrier, together with other wetland wildlife.

Dr Clarke commented: ‘Thank you to the whole team for an outstanding weekend – you did us, and me in particular, proud. It was great to see the goals and ambitions you have built starting to bear fruit. I know from feedback that Council and Board have been impressed by the energy and commitment of the team.’

Neil Beards, Tarmac’s estates manager for the area, added: ‘We were really pleased to host this high-profile meeting and look forward to continuing to work closely with the RSPB at this very important site.’
