Lafarge publish first ever Sustainability Report

New report provides insight into company’s performance across key areas of sustainability

LAFARGE Aggregates & Concrete UK have reached an important milestone with publication of their first ever report on sustainability.

Covering the last four years, the report takes a detailed look at past performance and how progress has been made on ambitious targets across key areas of sustainability – Lafarge’s people, products and services, partners and communities, legacy and economic.

Dyfrig James, regional president Lafarge A&C North and Central Europe and sponsor for sustainability in Lafarge A&C UK, said: ‘Sustainable practices have been central to the business since operations began. This report provides an insight into the work we do throughout the UK every day, allowing us to take a leading role in responsible and sustainable business.’

Among the achievements celebrated in the document are the award of the Carbon Trust Standard, the announcement of Lafarge A&C UK (LACUK) as industry leader in health and safety at the Mineral Products Association (MPA) Health & Safety Awards 2009, and the success of Readymix and Aggregates Businesses in gaining the BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing Certificates for all their operations.

While outlining past and current performance, the report also offers an insight into the future vision of LACUK with commitments on goals to be reached.

Jeremy Greenwood, managing director Readymix, said: ‘Our vision is to be the clear industry leader in sustainability, dedicated to operating as one of the UK’s leading responsible and sustainable businesses. We continue to stretch ourselves in order to provide our customers with innovative products and services in the most efficient and sustainable manner that help them in turn to reduce their environmental footprint and be more sustainable.

‘In our report, we have set ourselves a wide range of future sustainability targets. They include: increasing the use of recycled materials, developing zero-carbon housing solutions, establishing an external stakeholder panel and, in the area of water usage, establishing a water footprint on every one of our sites.’
