Company to reduce CO2 emissions by 33% per tonne of cement by end of 2020
LAFARGE have announced two key sustainability objectives within the framework of their partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The first target is the company’s commitment to further reduce its carbon emissions by 33% per tonne of cement produced by the end of 2020, compared with 1990 levels.
The second goal with WWF is to develop innovative sustainable solutions for constructing ‘low energy’ buildings by 2015. According to Lafarge, buildings currently account for 40% of the global primary energy consumption and reducing this is one of the key challenges to address climate change.
Lafarge are undertaking a number of research projects to help improve the energy efficiency of buildings, including contributing to the design of 500 new-build schemes.
Bruno Lafont, chairman and CEO of Lafarge, commented: ‘We have made the reduction of CO2 a major objective...It is no longer a matter of just reducing the CO2 emitted in the production of our materials, but it also developing construction solutions for buildings that consume less energy.’
