Kentish Ragstone used in Olympic preparations

Kent-based Gallagher Group supply high-quality stone for use in Olympic Games infrastructure work
KENTISH Ragstone supplied by Kent-based Gallagher Group will play a role this year’s London Olympic Games. The highly-regarded grey/buff-coloured stone will be used in the construction of parts of the Olympic infrastructure.
The material will be supplied from Gallagher’s Hermitage Quarry, near Aylesford, in Kent, which today provides the only remaining supply of high-quality Kentish Ragstone.
Gallagher Group have secured two ‘off-park’ schemes for ISG plc – the principal contractors on behalf of LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games).
The schemes using the Ragstone are located at Lee Valley, home to the White Water Rafting Centre, and Hadleigh Farm, venue for the Olympic mountain bike course. Both schemes will be undertaken in eight to 12 weeks, running concurrently.
The two schemes follow on from another contract in which Gallagher Group helped restore the walls of the river Lee, which runs through the centre of the main Olympic Park. The company supplied Kentish Ragstone blocks and coping stones (pictured) to match the existing Kentish Ragstone river walls.
Nick Yandle, chief executive of Gallagher Group in Kent said: ‘Using locally sourced indigenous materials is all part of ‘the sustainable Games’. We are delighted and honoured to have made a contribution to the London Olympic Games and look forward to watching Team GB winning lots of medals in the summer.’
