Imerys land top health and safety award for fifth year in a row

IMERYS Minerals Ltd’s continued commitment to protecting the health and safety of their employees and contractors has been further recognized in the annual RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Occupational Health and Safety awards.

The company won the prestigious Mining and Quarrying sector award for the fifth consecutive year in recognition of ongoing improvement to its UK-wide health and safety performance in a period of economic uncertainty.

Expressing his delight at receiving the award, Stewart Vale, Imerys’s environment, health and safety manager, said: ‘Building upon previous successes in our RoSPA award submissions is really important for Imerys. Making sure that we have a consistent approach to safety management is essential. Increasing ownership of safety throughout the workforce is very important to us all and receiving the RoSPA award is, I believe, recognition that we are continuing to move in the right direction in improving our health and safety culture.'

David Rawlins, RoSPA awards manager, said: ‘Imerys have shown a commitment to protecting the health and well-being of their employees and others. Organizations that do this deserve to have such dedication recognized and that’s where the RoSPA Awards come in.’

In 2007, Imerys became the first UK mining company to work proactively with the HSE through its FOILE (Field Operations Interventions with Large Employers) programme. This approach has helped the company make its sites generally better and safer places to work as well as improving relationships with the regulator.

‘The award is recognition of the overall benefits of this programme,’ added Mr Vale. ‘Even though FOILE will soon be coming to an end, we believe that it has laid down some strong foundations for a continued positive working relationship with the HSE. Safety is a team effort and the HSE is very much part of this.’
