Green Business praise for Tarmac

Company’s low-carbon know-how highly commended at national Green Business Awards 2011

TARMAC’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions was praised last week at a prestigious national business awards event celebrating environmental best practice.

The company’s work on carbon reduction at its Tunstead cement and lime operation was highly commended by judges at the national Green Business Awards 2011 and saw off tough competition from some of the UK’s leading companies to secure recognition in the Carbon Reduction category.

The Green Business Awards, which are run in partnership with leading business-to-business titles ‘The ENDS Report’ and ‘Management Today’, recognize businesses that have achieved environmental and sustainability excellence.

Tarmac were praised after the company reduced carbon emissions by 41% per tonne of cement, and installed a new state-of-the-art lime kiln which has cut carbon dioxide by 40% per tonne of lime.

The company also runs a comprehensive waste-derived fuels programme, which sees materials such as recycled tyre chips and waste wood burned as an alternative to fossil fuels, helping cut carbon and reduce waste.

Dr Martyn Kenny, Tarmac’s director of sustainability, said: ‘We’re proud to have received recognition of the work we’ve done from such an important national event. The commendation demonstrates our commitment to running sustainable operations by continually reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency.

‘We’re trying to lead the way by showing that the essential materials we produce can be made in a way that minimizes environmental impacts. We’re doing this at Tunstead by investing in new technologies and expanding our comprehensive waste-derived fuels programme, all of which are helping to deliver significant carbon savings.’

Earlier in 2011, Tarmac were awarded the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard across their entire UK business, in recognition of the significant strides the company is taking to reduce the long-term carbon emissions from its operations.
