Good work in woodwork
The results of a project by woodwork students from Cheadle High School were unveiled when they visited Tarmac’s Croxden Quarry recently.
The environmental project is a joint initiative between the school and Tarmac to encourage bird life to take up home in the restored areas of Croxden Quarry by building and erecting bird boxes. Tarmac donated the wood for the project and the after-school woodwork class crafted the boxes. This is the second year the school has worked with Tarmac on the project and this year some of the boxes will also be donated to local primary schools.
"Martin Sellars, assistant quarry manager, said: ‘Over the last 12 months we have been doing a bird survey on site with the local North Staffordshire branch of the RSPB. They have visited four times and surveyed 44 different species of birds on our site. The area around the quarry is also one of the main areas in North Staffordshire for barn owls, and so Croxden Quarry, together with the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, has erected two barn owl boxes.’"
