Dry stone walls back to their best

Dry stone walls dating back 200 years are being restored by Hanson Aggregates under a countryside stewardship scheme at Westbury Quarry in the Mendips.

"Rebuilding the walls is part of a 10-year management scheme which is now in its seventh year. It also includes restoration of a dew pond, management of narrow paddocks surrounded by walled boundaries and conservation of species-rich limestone grassland."

"The land, which contains a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest, overlooks the Somerset levels and is in the designated Mendip Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty."

"Hanson, who are working closely with the Somerset Wildlife Trust on the grassland management scheme, also host educational visits to the site."
